Pre-match build up vs Colchester United

Spurs are set for their latest FA Cup fixture, this time against lower league opposition Colchester United.

The game was perceived by many as an opportunity for Pochettino to rest many key players, and despite a youthful back four there could be many eyebrows raised at the inclusion of Harry Kane, Erik Lamela and Christian Eriksen in the starting XI- perhaps a key indication that the gaffer is not even close to entertaining the prospect of another FA Cup replay with what is already a packed fixture list.

The manager’s pre-match quotes seem to back this up, with the Argentine stating: “It’s a test for our squad, that’s true – a very busy period with a lot of games. But we’ve come through a very busy period too and that was a big test for the squad. We’re not worried, I think we’ve shown we’ve got enough quality to compete across all the competitions.”

Colchester manager Kevin Keen believes that his League One boys will be more than up for the fight, however: “This has been a bit of a bonus week, and everyone will enjoy it, but we want to beat Tottenham to get through to the next round. It is going to be a tough task, but the boys are switched on and ready to give a performance which hopefully credits the football club.”

Tottenham are naturally the favourites to progress through to the next round and the rotation gives the manager the opportunity to inspect the credentials of some of his fringe players.

Kevin Wimmer has had limited opportunity to shine in the first team with the solid partnership of world-class centre backs Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld locking out the first places. However, with the former suffering a significant knee injury against Crystal Palace this really is his chance to prove to Pochettino that he is the man that the gaffer can place his trust in!

Let the magic of the cup commence!
