Final day build up vs. Newcastle

Today, Spurs travel up north to St. James’ Park to play an already-relegated Newcastle side in the hope of securing second place in the league.

After suffering heartbreak at Stamford Bridge and then losing to Southampton at White Hart Lane, the boys will be hoping to finish their season on a high by clinching a win today.

The Magpies, after Sunderland gained a win midweek, have found themselves already relegated and will hope that this afternoon they can put on a performance to enable them to leave the Premier League with a little pride.

For Spurs , Moussa Dembele and Dele Alli are ruled out of today’s game following suspensions. Nabil Bentaleb remains out with a knee problem.

Fabricio Coloccini remains out of the Newcastle side today while Aleksandar Mitrovic could make a return to the side having not started for six games.

What the managers had to say

Whilst Mauricio Pochettino did acknowledge the fact that Tottenham could finish above Arsenal for the first time in 21 years, he stated that he wanted to remain ambitious and ignore the prospect of finishing above their fierce rivals.

He said: “I can understand it, for our supporters it’s special to be above Arsenal, but I want to be second not because we’ll be above our enemy, our opponent, but because we are ambitious.”

On the other hand, his opposing boss Rafa Benitez could only talk about his future at the club. After being asked whether he will stay with Newcastle next season, he said that the initial meetings with the board have been ‘positive’.

The final word

This season, Spurs have been magnificent and have proved many a critic wrong on the road to a best ever Premier League finish.

Many a star has also been born under the second year of Pochettino’s tenure, as the likes of Erik Lamela have grown into key players; having failed to live up to the billing in previous campaigns.

Not only this, but the development of young players such as Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Eric Dier has been admirable and it is now likely that the trio will not only be on the plane to France come the summer but will also be core members of the squad.

Spurs have been incredible all season and its vital that they end their season on a high and give the travelling fans a performance that they deserve.
