Throwback: Gareth Bale’s iconic hat-trick in Milan

With the completion of today’s Champions League draw (Spurs will face CSKA Moscow, Bayer Leverkusen and Monaco in their first campaign since the 2010-11 season) we thought we would take the opportunity to focus upon an iconic moment from the last time we were involved in Europe’s premier football competition.

Tottenham took on Inter Milan in the group stage of the tournament where early goals from Javier Zanetti, a brace from Samuel Eto’o and Dejan Stankovic coupled with a red card for the often calamitous Heurelho Gomes threatened to embarrass the north Londoners.

However, an iconic hat-trick from Gareth Bale, an emerging superstar at the time, meant that Tottenham returned home from the San Siro with a moderately more respectable 4-3 scoreline.

Whilst the match may well have resulted in a defeat, it is well regarded as one of the most defining moments of Gareth Bale’s time at White Hart Lane as he fully introduced himself onto the world stage.
